Observations
Attending a big trade show is always an exciting experience, and Maison et Objet is very big – there are thousands of exhibitors from all around the world, thousands of square meters packed tight with innumerable things, thousands of people armed with suitcases, coats, catalogs, laptops, ideas, sandwiches, business cards, orders, disorder and a babel of languages and tastes.

Each stand is a world unto itself. You walk into the midst of a multitude of exchanges with every step you take – of projects, opinions, money, dreams and points of view. Generally, on the first day of the show I just observe and take it all in. I observe, and get the strong sense that this grand unorchestrated group performance reveals the essence human soul. You can feel the trends, you can choose any direction you want or be seduced by a surprising irresistible attraction. And, as always, I need to negotiate between my expectations and my inner sensations to decide what direction to take.

This year was a little different as I was feeling emotional, thrilled, actually. dep design store was listed on the Indirizzi/Next 2014 page of Elle Decor Italia, among the recommended addresses for design in 2014. Elle Decor, with respect to home and interior design, has always been a bible for me. To see my store on the same page of suppliers, distributors and retailers that are among the most respected names in design was an important endorsement for me. It was a confirmation that I was on the right road, although I admit that it makes me a bit nervous about making mistakes.

In the end, as always, I made my choices, and it wasn’t even that hard. I yielded to an impulse that I have had for some time, mostly subconsciously. It happened in front of a green velvet sofa, a mirror, a coffee table, a drinks trolley, all designed in the 1950’s with an elegance that is at once exacting yet soft. They have been reproduced by Gubi and soon they will be gracing the store.

We are witnessing an explosion in interest for all things kitchen and home cooking, as witnessed by the incredible number of cooking-themed shows on television, foodie sites and recipe sharing on social networks. The companies producing kitchen tools and articles for the table are experiencing a kind of renaissance and were showing an incredible range of innovative products. As always, just stop by dep to see what’s new.

Before the new items arrive in the store, we’ve got to make room for them. We have discounted many articles from 30% to 50%. Brands included are Bitossi Home, Abitare, Kose, Linum, Society, Ichendorf Milano, L’arte nel Pozzo, Serax, LSA and all of the remaining clothing for women. There are some great deals to be had.

One more thing — you can’t go to Paris with out seeing at least one art exhibition. This time we were able to see the show of Brassai’s photographs of Paris at the Hotel de Ville, aptly titled “Pour l’amour de Paris” and it was an intense look at Paris in the 1930’s and the decades to follow. Of course, we discovered a few new places to eat and before heading “home” in the Marais, we ordered some crêpes with lemon and sugar and waited impatiently as the steam rose from the griddle.

We’re looking forward to seeing you in the store to talk about these things and more...
